Geocache Description:

A stroll or cycle along the disused railway track from Milton of Campsie to Lennoxtown.
Designed to be done in conjunction with "Redhills".

The Campsie Branch Line of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway opened in July 1848. It ran from Campsie Junction (now Lenzie Station) through Kirkintilloch, Milton of Campsie and Lennoxtown to Strathblane. It provided a vital freight link for the corn and lint mills at Milton of Campsie. In 1880 the Lion Foundry opened in Kirkintilloch, which relied on the nearby Forth and Clyde canal for transporting in its raw materials and the Campsie railway for its outgoing goods. By the 1950s all its work was for the GPO, producing manhole covers, Red phone boxes and post boxes. It closed in 1984.
The gradual run-down of the railway began in the late 50s until its final closure in April 1966.

Park at N55 57.865 W004 09.646.
Walk left out of the car park for about 50 yards, where there is a slope and steps down to your left, leading to the old station. The platforms are still there and you now have a straight and flat walk along the disused track to the cache.

The box is a short way just off the main track, which is very busy with joggers, dog walkers, horse riders and cyclists, even early in the morning. During the summer months, foliage on the small trees and bushes at the edge of the path will give you a little cover from the path, but the cache site is still fairly exposed, so some stealth will be needed!
Listen out for the woodpecker which was very busy on both our recent visits here.

If you are feeling energetic, you can now rejoin the path and carry on along it to do "Redhills". If your legs have had enough or you are attempting a record number of caches in one day, then we recommend you go back to your car and drive to the suggested parking for the second cache, which will give you a very short second walk.
