Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Great Swamp Battle! The Battle was also called the Great Swamp Fight and Great Swamp Massacre. Below is a short paragraph describing the events in this area:

The Great Swamp in South County, Rhode Island, was the site of the last stand of the Narragansett Indians in King Philip's War against the Colonists. In the bloody engagement which took place there on Sunday, December 19, 1675, troops from the Confederation of the United Colonies of New England including Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, and Connecticut and Rhode Island took part and because of the numbers participating, killed and wounded, the battle had been unequalled in New England up to that time. As a result of the battle, the military strength and resources of the most powerful Indian tribe in New England were broken forever.

The cache is easily found, as the purpose of this hide is to expose people to the events of 1675 in this area.

Best access to this site is by going down Great Swamp Battle Monument Road off of Route 2, south of the Route 2 and Route 138 intersection. Park at the gate. Continue on foot for a half mile to the site of the Great Swamp Battle Monument at the end of the path. Cars and other motorized vehicles are not allowed past the gate. Wear at least 200 square inches of orange from the second Saturday of October to the last day of February. Traditional strollers are not recommended. Bug spray may be needed in the summer months. You will need to do some moderate bushwhacking. There is a small FTF memento. The hint is a spoiler. We hope you enjoy this piece of RI and colonial history!
