Geocache Description:

A drive by available unless there's snow. It is well hidden though to protect it during winter and from the beating summer UV experienced up here. Look out for snakes, I've seen one in the area in summer.

Could this be Victoria's highest 2wd drive-by? It's certainly not Victoria's highest drive by - I own that too but you need an extra set of gears and another diff. At 1704m the view is fantastic and well worth the drive. It will be impossible to find once the snow falls. It's in the rocks so there's no need to search too widely. If area continues to show signs of trampling I'll archive this cache.

Located on the side of the Great Alpine Rd - the north east's answer to the Great Ocean Rd - is this lookout. With views of substance in every direction it eclipses the latter in my opinion, but then I've always preferred mountains to sea.

Danny Cavedon was the RACV bloke up here for years. This was his favourite spot for a bit of a kip between jobs apparently. If you were looking for Danny you'd often find him here, maybe you still can.

The view is astounding and changes every time you stop here. Today was smoky with fuel reduction burning going on in the valleys. Tomorrow will be different. Post a pic with your log if you are able...

Looking out from the lookout was once a sea of green, but since Jan 2003 a very different view presents itself. The sea of dead timber you see is a result of the manner in which Snowgums recover from fire. They regrow from the base rather than sprouting their leaves from within the damaged branches - the way Australians typically think of eucalypt fire recovery. They have a tuberous growth under the ground from which they regrow. The regrowth here is now 3 years old and demonstrates the very slow growth rates at these altitudes. It will all be green again in my lifetime, but not for many many years. The fires were largely the result of lightening strikes and fire conditions not seen for many years.

This cache was placed for the High Country Plains, Peaks & Poetry 4wd event cache in April 2006.

If you have a 4wd have a crack at Rocky Rooftops if you have time. You can see it from this location.

Access to this area in winter requires you carry chains and fit them where required. Access to this cache will be all but impossible at such times due to snow cover generated by road clearing plant. The view is still well & truly worthwhile though.

Enjoy!

DJ
