Geocache Description:

The Civilian Conservation Corp ( CCC) was created by FDR in the early 1930's to find work for thousands of unemployed men thrown out of their jobs by the great stock market crash of 1929. The CCC was initially designed for unemployed men between the ages of 18 and 25 and it would eventually employ over 3,000,000 men, most of them city dwellers.
Young men who lanquished without work or hope in the inner cities now replanted cut-over forests, fought pest investations, stopped soil erosion and battled forest fires. But the CCC's greatest legacy was the role it played in creating trails, roads, bridges, pavillions and picnic grounds many of which are still enjoyed by visitors to countless parks and recreation areas all over the country. Certainly us geocachers are reaping the benefits of this generations hard work. OK, history lesson over.
At the entrance to Upton State Forest is on of only five surviving CCC camps in Massachusetts. Originally there were 15 buildings at the Upton site - only three now survive. Work is ongoing for the restoration of these buildings and plans for a possible museum of sorts and a research site for the states CCC records.
Parking is available outside the gate. The cache is located away from the buildings down by a small pond.
