Geocache Description:

We invite visits to 20 NEFF-owned Community Forests throughout New England. NEFF is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the conservation and sustainable management of New England forestlands. It is our pleasure to share these forests with fellow outdoor enthusiasts! This cache is a hybrid.

Directions: Traveling North or South on Route 495 take Exit 30 (Routes 2A/110). Turn at the end of the ramp for Routes 2A/110 East. Proceed a short distance (approx. 1000 feet) and turn right on Rogers Street. The yellow Littleton Historical Society building will be on your left. Very quickly at the top of the hill turn right onto Foster Street. Almost immediately you will see the fire station on your left, and at the far edge of the Fire Station parking lot is Wilderness Road. The NEFF Prouty Woods Community Forest sign directs traffic to the left onto Wilderness Road. Proceed up Wilderness Road. To access the forest, follow Wilderness Road to the gate and park next to the barn. A trail map is located at the kiosk.

The geocache is near the top of Wilderness Hill as you walk from the Two Brothers Trail to the summit. Look for the two stone walls that form a pathway that was most likely made to help drive animals from one part of the property to another. Once you find the stone walls walk north to the GPS coordinates.

About Prouty: NEFF purchased this 107-acre property from the Prouty family in the fall of 2003 to establish an exemplary forest demonstration site and the main house serves as the headquarters for the organization. Prouty Woods is a truly unique and significant tract of woodland within minutes of Route 495. The property includes 1600 feet of frontage on Long Lake and the top of “Wilderness Hill” with expansive views to the west and north including Mount Monadnock. The combination of forest, hay field and riparian zones provides much-needed habitat for a variety of species. The forest has been under professional forest management for many years. Walking trails connect to a town-wide system of walking trails.

Letterboxing Directions:

· Park at the Prouty Woods Community Forest trailhead and hike up the road to the W.A. King Education center at the summit of the hill.

· Walk to the overlook on the North side of the hill.

· To the East, you'll see a sign pointing to a new trail that leads to the Two Brother's Trail (near the small cabin).

· Take this small trail with blue blazes until you step over the first of two rock walls.

· Turn right and walk 23 paces (46 steps) to a large white pine then turn Northwest and walk 2 paces to your prize.

· Continue on the small trail until you reach the Two Brothers Trail then turn left.

· Follow the sign toward White St.

· Go Left at the next Loop Trail sign and follow them back to the main road.

· Head Right a little ways and you're back at the trailhead.

NEFF is grateful to all the wonderful volunteers throughout New England who placed these caches and made the Summer Geo-Challenge possible. Thank you “Choi” for placing this cache in our Prouty Woods!!!
