Geocache Description:

Location: McNeely Park
This cache is part of the "I Wonder…" series based on the trivial yet curious questions that arise in daily life. To obtain this cache (a 30-caliber ammo box), a short hike with minor bushwhacking is required, depending upon your approach. There is no need to untie anything. If necessary, use one of the “tools” available nearby.

I Wonder…Do Fish Sleep?
Answer: Technically, fish don’t sleep, at least not as defined by Webster’s New World Dictionary, “a natural, regularly recurring condition of rest for the body and mind, during which the eyes are usually closed and there is little or no conscious thought or voluntary movement.” However, fish do get some rest.

Fast facts:
  • Most fish (excluding sharks and rays) don’t have eyelids, so they can’t close them to sleep, though some fish do have transparent membranes protecting their eyes from irritants.
  • Tuna, bluefish, and marlins never stop swimming, so they can’t sleep in a traditional sense.
  • Reef fish may become inactive and hover, but are still aware of approaching danger.
  • Parrot fish exude a membrane similar to a baggie surrounding their entire bodies for protection at night when inactive, but their eyes remain open.
Note: If you hike on a trail where horses are allowed, please yield the right of way and try not to scare them with sudden movements or noises. Trails are open to hikers/cachers, but some trails are used primarily or frequently for horseback riding.

The cache container is a small ammo box containing an FTF certificate and prize ($10 Kingfish gift card, no trade required), logbook, pencils, and theme-related trade items. After finding the cache and signing the log, trade objects if you wish. Please close the container and carefully return it to its appropriate spot, using one of the nearby “tools” if necessary, to keep it a fun challenge for the next cacher.

Themes and Trade Items:
Recommended trade items for this cache could relate to fish, fishing, or water-related activities. TV shows. Feel free to trade even if your item doesn’t fit one of the cache themes, but please do not leave food, scented items, or weapons. Travel bugs, signature items, and small objects are welcome in the cache as space permits.

Dedication:
This cache was partially inspired by Ol' Diz (GCG95C), a classic multicache placed by Lumberjack Tom in this same park. The legendary adventures of Diz, a fisherman trying to catch his nemesis El Lobo, also created memorable adventures for cachers. He must have left a few of his items behind in this cache just in case others wish to try their luck at Lake McNeely. Who knows if El Lobo ever sleeps?

Series Background:
This series was inspired by my students who frequently ask questions in class with the aim of getting off topic. Although they rarely succeed at the moment, they know my passion for learning. At a later time, I will search for the answer to satisfy my own curiosity as well as theirs.
