Geocache Description:

This multicache is in Riverton(Jacobstown until 1858)and features an enterprising young pioneer sometimes referred to as the father of Riverton. Identity at second cache. Read the info.board and memorial.

Riverton was one of the first European settled towns and was visited by mariners as early as 1800. It flourished first as a whaling station then as a fishing and farming centre and now is also a popular holiday resort with soaring property prices.
The young pioneer was born in England in 1810 and in his early teens stowed away on a smugglers ship. He didnt get away with that but soon after successfully stowed away a second time to Australia, and then after working on whaling boats for a time moved on to N.Z. in 1828. In1834 he was sent to Riverton by Johnny Jones, an established whaler, to set up a whaling station at Jacobstown .This he did so well that he soon bought Jones out and operated the station himself. In 1838 he married the daughter of the Maori chief of Centre Island and in so doing also gained a large tract of farmland. He led the development of Jacobstown and encouraged many mariners to settle on the land when the whaling boom ended about 1850. He was a member of the Southland Provincial council and encouraged the citizens with regular church services and folk dancing to his violin. In failing health he moved to Australia and died there in 1874, but I believe is buried in the local cemetary. The first waypoint has only the coords. for the final on a laminated card in a 200ml box. Please do not remove the card. Park nearby and there is a short walk. The cache final is a 200ml box and has a logbook and pencil and a few trading items. I recommend a visit also to the 1837 cottage built for our pioneer at S46-21.189 and E168-01.036.
