Geocache Description:

Join us for the Maryland Geocaching Society's June 2006 Meet & Greet, hosted by vyper4 at Cunningham Falls State Park!

Mark your calendar and make plans now to attend the June Meet & Greet, sponsored by The Maryland Geocaching Society! Event starts at 11 A.M. on Sunday, June 4th.

"Cunningham Falls State Park, located in the Catoctin Mountains, is known for its history and scenic beauty, as well as its 78-foot cascading waterfall. The Falls are located one half mile from the lake in the Houck Area via the Falls Trail.

Before the first Europeans arrived, many small Native American tribes farmed, hunted and fished the area. Tradition says the name Catoctin came from the tribe, the Kittoctons, who once lived at the foot of the mountains near the Potomac River. By the time the settlers began to arrive in the Monocacy River Valley, Native Americans were seldom seen.

Early settlers used timber from the forests to make charcoal to fuel the Catoctin Iron Furnace. Too many years of clear-cutting and unscientific farming practices contributed to the overuse and destruction of the land.

In 1954, the area was divided into two parks, divided by Maryland Route 77. The northern 5,000 acres is now Catoctin Mountain Park, a unit of the National Park Service. The remaining 5,000 acre parcel was named Cunningham Falls State Park.

There are two main developed areas in the park, the William Houck Area and the Manor Area."

There is an entrance fee to the park $3.00 per vechicle for Maryland residents and $4.00 for out of state guests.

The event is open to ALL geocachers, even if you're not from Maryland or if you're not a member of the MGS (join here--it's free!) We encourage any geocacher who has an interest in quality caches and wants to have a good time to join us! New to the game? New to the area? Visiting from out of town? Feel free to join us!

This event will be held rain or shine. We'll have a brief business meeting to go over some things the MGS is working on, and we'll eat lots of good food, share lots of great stories, and fill our heads with lots of great memories!

The event's format is potluck. Please post a "Will attend" note on the cache page if you plan on coming and what dish you plan to bring to share.

There are existing caches in the park and new ones are in the works.

If you are a Geocacher in the state of Maryland, please
join the Maryland Geocaching Society. This is a great way
to get the most out of Geocaching in our region.
