Easy to get to, wheelchair accessible. Plenty of parking is available. Lot is closed from 11 PM to 6 AM. This lot may not always be available when special events are nearby.
This is a micro cache, be sure to bring a pen.
This cache is named for the USS Oriskany, which was at port here from December 2004 through June 2005. This ship was placed on the gulf floor 22 miles off of this coast on May 17, 2006.
In brief: Oriskany was an aircraft carrier built in the New York Navy Yard, and launched in 1945. She joined the Pacific Fleet in 1952, and was involved with the Korean War conflict.
In 1961, she was the first aircraft carrier fitted with the Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS).
In 1965, Oriskany was used in the Vietnam War, as part of the WestPac cruise. In 1966, forty-four crew members were killed in a major fire aboard. She returned to the war zone in 1967.
The Oriskany was decommissioned in 1976. She stayed in Bremerton, WA, until 1997. From 1997-1999, she was at Vallejo, CA. Then she went to Texas.
She came here from Texas in 2004, but was sent back before the 2005 Hurricane Season. In March 2006, Oriskany was returned to Pensacola at the Naval Air Station.
The USS Oriskany now serves as a large artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico.
