Another cache on the Backbone Trail.
This cache is located at the Ray Miller trailhead of the Backbone Trail. This is the westernmost trailhead for the Backbone Trail and the “Beginning” of the trail if you are hiking from west to east. Today I assembled here with thirteen other hikers preparing to begin the annual Backbone Trek, sponsored by the Santa Monica Mountains Trail Council (http://www.smmtc.org/), tomorrow morning. Our trek will cover the entire 69-mile length of the backbone trail over the course of seven days, camping each night along the trail. I decided to place a cache here to mark the beginning of our trek. I will place another at the “End” of the trail in seven days when we are finished. The cache is located near the Ray Miller trailhead sign and no bushwhacking is required. The cache is a bright colored bison container. There are frequently many muggles in the area. Be careful when retrieving and replacing the cache. Please rehide well. 6-24-2013 The Springs Fire burned all the brush at this location as well as the cache. Today I replaced the cache. It used to be a hanger, now there is nothing to hang it on, so look lower. 2-12-2015 After the fire the Sumac here was burned, so I placed the cache on the ground. Now, after the grat flood of December 12, 2014, the cache was washed away. But the Sumac is growing back in, so now, it is once again a hanger. 8-13-2019. Seems to be missing again. It's now a hanging, silver bison. Should be easy to spot. As always, be very careful poking around in the rocks and bushes and always look carefully before reaching into these areas.
