Geocache Description:

Inde i selve kirken ses bl.a. C.V.
- apr.

The church of Horne is the only round church on Funen. It was built of granite boulders and lime in the eleventh century and like other round churches in the country it was built to serve a double purpose: First to honor the Glory of God and second to act as a fortification. The defence functions can still be seen, the walls are about 2 metres thick and there are arrow slits in the walls. However, the church of Horne differs from all other churches: During the Middle Ages the wall was torn down in the Eastern and the Western side of the church and the Gothic style extensions you see today were built.
Inside the church you can see the altar painting from 1812 by C.V.Eckersberg picturing Jesus and the small children. The font was made by the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
Once the church owned one of the finest treasures from the Middle Ages ever found in Denmark. The so-called ’Horne Book’ is now in custody of the National Museum of Denmark. It is a Gospel Book written on parchment with exquisite miniatures and initials, a ’de luxe’ bind adorned with silver, walrus tooth and rock crystal.
In the North-Eastern side of the churchyard you will find a large red house built in Roman style, this is a mausoleum built in the 1820ies for the Brahe family.
The church of Horne is open Tuesday to Friday from 08:00 to 14:00 from October to April and in the summer time, May to September, from 08:00 to 20:00 – unless religious ceremonies are taking place.
