Geocache Description:

THE COORDINATES FOR SUGGESTED PARKING ARE N 35 3.968 & W 80 44.429

For previous finders: Cache location has moved further into the woods to avoid muggles.

Colonel's Barracks is the first cache in a series of Progressive Sequential Caches of which there are five parts. As you finish each cache, you will find the coordinates for the next cache on the inside cover of the log book. You may complete all caches in one outing, or you may interrupt the finds as you see fit. About 2 - 3 miles of hiking are required to cover all 5 caches in one trip. There are other parking lots that might get you closer to the caches, but be aware that the pond is difficult to get around at its northern point. Go to the web page listed below this paragraph and print the park map to get an idea of where the trails are and where they will take you. These trails are bike trails, so make sure you get off the trail when you see a bike approach.

You may log and get credit for all finds in this series, which includes: COLONEL’S BARRACKS, JEWELRY BOX, REPTILE HOUSE, PUZZLER, & WATER TOYS. Remember they have to be done SEQUENTIALLY for you to get credit for them. For example, you cannot log PUZZLER before JEWELRY BOX or else your log will be deleted. All caches are ammo boxes and each has a theme that the title reflects.

When you are looking for the caches, PLEASE DO NOT look like the beginning geocacher with your GPSr held at arms length, plodding along through the park visitors while looking only at the GPSr. Be discrete. After you have signed the log and entered the new coordinates on your GPSr, be sure that the lid is locked down on the cache securely and that the area has been camouflaged again. Do not leave this important task to your children.

All of the caches in this series are located within Colonel Francis Beatty Park and require some bushwhacking. There are several other caches in this park that are not in this series. You will pass some of them while traveling from cache to cache in this series. Be aware of your proximity to the trails; don’t make it easy for muggles.

This Park was opened in 1999. A new phase just opened and is not shown on the map. The road that ends at a trailhead, just north of the pond, now continues into a parking area with a playground on the left and unfinished softball fields on the right. From what I have seen on the internet a little bit more development is planned around the softball fields. There is a great playground for the kids near the softball fields, and some excellent paved walking trails on the northeast side of the lake. You can see from the map there are tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, and, coming soon, softball fields.

If you enjoyed this series of caches try Top Cat's series in Park Road Park (see GCH3W8, GCH3WD, GCH3WF, GCH3WJ, & GCH3WN). Top Cat's series is where I got the inspiration to make this series.

**** A HUGE thanks to Therapaint for adopting this cache from the original owner, jjb79792, and maintaining it for ~2 years. BBA adopted it on Jan 2010.
