The cave of Csákvár
Also known as Barachaza-cave, Esterhazy-cave
Length: 87.5 m
Conservationist area, but you don't need license to get in.

The cliffs of the Great-mountain (Guba-mountain) that is located SW from Csákvár foreshadow a cave from far distance, but the entrance will appear after you look behind the trees and the bushes. When you reach the cave, you can see the entrance that consists of 3 leaks. The entrance division has been known for a long while, it was first mentioned in 1899. Although it became famous only after fossils were found by the Hungarian Tourist Association’s Department of Székesfehérvár in 1952.

The cave system that is in dolomites originated from the triad period came to existance along roughly perpendicular, cross leaks.
The cave in these dolomites originate from the triad period, it came to existence by some perpendicular leaks, and 3 of these leaks having entrance on the surface. The middle leak facing to west can be easily “discovered” by anyone, it is 30 meters long and has many active dripstones inside. At the end, there is a 6 meters high tunnel facing up. There are many scrub roots hanging from the splits. This part of the cave can be toured in normal outdoor clothes.

The leak on the right is more narrow, and ends in the main cave. The whole length of that leak is opened from the top, the ceiling is consists of some falled rocks. The leak on the left side is narrow, and came impassable after a few meters.

Ottokar Kadic did there excavations in 1926 and 1928. After a long break, from 1951-53, Miklos Kretzoi finished the exploration of the cave.

The upper level contained neolit archeological findings and fossils of 81 different animals (e.g. Bear, fallow-deer, pheasant). That was the layer of the time passed from bronze age until recent past. Under this layer they found "cave hyena", "wooly rhinoceros", "tarand deer", hidden in grey-brown clay. The lowest layer's fossils are more older than the others in the upper layers. The cave's celebrity is because of the fossils found in this layer. During the excavations they found 87 genuses, the most important are the following: a 3-fingered horse (Hipparion primigenium), a sabertooth tiger, an ancient elephant with special teeth, and one animal, which is very similar to bears nowadays (Simocyon hungaricus).

At the time of the excavation, these findings came with great noise, and was told that this is the oldest cave-fauna of the known world. Cronological situation: later miocen, about 8-9 million years old. The 3-fingered horse arrived to Europe ~11 million years ago, and disappeared ~4 million years ago.

This important cave's fossils wrote the name of Csakvar into the paleontology's history, they named this Pannon-end vertebrate ancient level to Csakvarium.

The other interesting thing can be found about 2 meters high on the wall near to the entrance, there is a mortised caption originated from the Roman Empire, written in latin language. There was a nation living in Floriana (Csakvar nowadays) in the 1.-2. centuries called Eraviscus. This Celt originated nation controlled the area of Tolna, Fejer, Pest and Komarom-Esztergom (these are counties in Hungary). They used to sacrifise to Diana, the goddess of hunting, in the entrance area of that cave. The caption in english: "Dedicated to Diana, Marcus Aurelius Constantinus, the veteran of the pretorians, completed his pledge gladly. Aurelius Constantinus made it on his own finance."

The cave can be easily reached, and may be an engaging trip target. If you want to see the cave inside, bring lamp, but you don't need special preparing, and special clothes, you can roam it in a quarter hour.
