Geocache Description:

This cache requires you to take a walk around Brentwood Town Centre. This will take you on a gentle circuit of about 1.5 km. All information is outside and can be completed 24 hours a day. Solve all the questions to find the final cache.

The final cache location is not at the coordinates listed. This is the location of the town hall where the trail starts.

Take a walk around Brentwood Town Centre to learn more about its history and some of the key features of the town.

The final cache is a magnetic key safe with a small log book in it.

There is no pen or pencil so please bring your own - you will probably need one anyway to solve the clues!
You can of course solve the clues in any order but by following the clues in order you will go in a circular path. If you go in the day there are a number of cafes and coffee shops that you can stop in on your way around.

Town Hall

To begin the trail start at the Town Hall and find the information boards that describe the history of Brentwood.
The Essex County Lunatic Asylum opened in 185A on land which was part of the Brentwood Hall Estate.

Now head towards Wilson's Corner and the next point on our tour. You will past Brentwood Cathedral on your left and Brentwood Public School on your right.

Wilson's Corner

At the next point you will find an obelisk that is a memorial. It was erected by public subscription in 18XY. Where X+Y=B.
For the next part of the tour you will be walking on the south side of the high street, that is the left side from Wilson's Corner.

The High Street Trough

The public horse trough and drinking fountain was gifted to the town in 19C0. As the date is quite hard to read you can also work out C as The gift of ___ and ___ Larkin. Take the number of letters in the first first name, subtract the number of letters in the second first name, and then divide by 2.

The Post Office

Today the Post Office is located inside WH Smith's; however until 2008 it was located in this building. Above the staff entrance there is a window. Count the pains of glass divide this number by four and subtract two. This will give you D.

Thomas Becket Chapel

At Thomas Becket Chapel there is an information board with a map of Brentwood c. 17E7.
Continue down the High Street until you get to Crown Street.

Crown Street

On the corner of Crown Street there is a lamp post. The number on the lamp post is SF.
Continue down Crown Street until you get to a Post Box. This is post box CM14 YZ. G = (2+Y+Z).
Turn left in front of the multistory car park to the grassy area with benches. Barry Bradford Died in 199H.
In front of Brentwood Library there is a asking people not to do something here. It has seven words. Take the number of letters in the first four words and subtract the number of letters in the second three words, this gives you I.

St. Thomas Church

You are now at the back of the grave yard for St. Thomas Church. Maria, Wife of Jacob Corell died 31st March 18J6. This is easier to see from inside the grave yard from the public footpath; however if the gate is locked shut you can see it through the gate.

The Cache Location

To finish your walk the final cache is located at:
N 51° AB.CDE E 000° FG.HIJ
Substitute the letters above with your answers to get the final coordinates.

Parking

This is a town centre cache so parking is limited to defined areas. I have included the coordinates for the town hall parking (closest to the start) and also the multistory car park which is a short walk away. Details of more parking the parking charges can be found on Brentwood Council's Website.

There is also some on road parking and a small lay by near the front of the town hall; these may provide some free parking but please check posted restrictions so that you don't get a ticket!

Other Geocaches

There are a few other 'urban' Geocaches that are located in or around Brentwood Town Centre. All are just a couple of minutes walk away. The train station is the furthest and that is only ten minutes walk!
