If you have a dog, Take them, they will love you for it, though
make sure you are prepared to take a wet muddy dog home with you!
Its one of the few remaining places you can take them off the lead
and let them go for it.
There is a river for them to swim in, and lots of good sniffs. I
have occasionally seen goats and pigs around here, but not
often
The Cache site is a lookout at the top of the little know
"Supplejack" track trough some great native forest.
This cache requires a short drive of about 8km from Nelson into the
surrounding forestry including about 3km of well packed gravel road
suitable for ordinary 2WD cars.
Drive up the Maitai Valley Road to S41 16.542 E173 19.732
And turn left here into the forestry.
Sometimes this road is closed for fire risk, or Mountain Bike
Events, and any closure will be posted on the sign at the carpark
here.
Travel a short distance up to S41 16.398 E173 20.045
At this point turn left into Sharlands Road and over the easy
ford.
Drive up this road to one of the two options below
Option 1
Drive to the Lower Track Entry Point at
S41 15.841 E173 20.374 and park your car at one of the close-ish
side bays. You will then need to follow the "Supplejack" track up
hill to the cache site.
You could come down using one of the other "Matai"'or "Rimu" tracks
which eventually meet back up at the bottom again.
Option 2
Drive to the Upper Track Entry Point at
S41 15.301 E173 20.816 and park your car at the close-ish side bay.
If you get to the gate you have gone too far.
You will then need to follow the track down the river for about 400
metres until you come to either one of the "Matai" or "Rimu" trails
going up to the right. Dosn't matter which you take, they all end
up at the same spot and then on to the lookout.
You can return via the "Supplejack" track and back up the river
track to the car.
This cache can be done in conjunction with my "Eddy's Playground in
the lost world" cache. These two can be done easily in a morning or
afternoon and affords some great views over Nelson, along with some
great Native Bush.
