Geocache Description:

This multi-cache is based on part of the “Papanui Heritage Trail” to mark World Heritage Day June 2006

It is highly recommended that you walk the route to the cache. It will take about 1 hour at a leisurely walking pace. The route is suitable for cycling and very little walking if going by car.

At each of the following waypoints information must be gathered to complete the coordinates for the cache.

1. S 43° 29.650 E 172° 36.443 The Library
Sadly the free “Papanui Heritage Trail” pamphlet is no longer available from this public library. The Wiki internet site for the Papanui Heretage Trail contains a lot of good information. Alternatively take time to read all the info at the next WP.

2. S 43° 29.816 E 172° 36.427 St Pauls Church grounds.
The following information can be found on the notice board at the site of a Shirley / Papanui Jubilee Project. Be sure to read both sides.

The Church opened AB December 1877
The first school opened 185C

Adjacent on the other side of the path is the gravesite of the Matson family where nameplates have been inserted around the outside edging of a large oblong plot. The grandfathers are John and Henry Matson. How many name plates are there? Answer DE

3. S 43° 29.762 E 172° 36.209 Matson Estate.
This waypoint is outside one of four workers cottages erected (between street numbers 208 – 220) on Henry Matsons estate. Sadly one has been demolished following the earthquakes. Locate the cottage which has been beautifully restored painted in shades of green. Can you spot the gazebo? What is the street number? The sum of the 3 digits is F.

4. S 43° 30.006 E 172° 36.152 The Chapel.
The chapel viewed in the grounds from the WP was built in 1937. The chapel has G arched windows seen from this spot.

5. S 43° 29.936 E 172° 36.255 The Croquet Green
There are H players shelters surrounding the croquet green? (including the odd one)

6. S 43° 29.804 E 172° 36.275 The Memorial
Take note of the Rev Griffin memorial. There are J words are in the last line.

Now count the stone pillars supporting the rose arbour?

7. The coordinates for the final destination are
S 43° 29.(K-J -J)(C-D)(A+B) E 172° 36.(H-G)(F+A)(D+E)

Updated 4 Jan 2012 to take account of changes due the earthquake.
