Geocache Description:

This cache is located at a small settlement at the Ashburton river mouth, Hakatere. The settlement is split into two with the upper being a little more "Posh" than the lower. Many of the residents in the upper settlement live here permanently. Unfortunately the beach is not safe for swimming and the sea fishing is poor, but during the season some nice trout are caught around the mouth.

This cache will involve some simple calculations on the listed co-ordinates to enable you to locate the final cache position.

At the listed co-ords you will find an obvious feature, there you must find a small stamped plate discretely hidden which contains the calculations to be performed on the listed co-ords to reach the next waypoint (Treat the co-ords as a whole number when doing calculations, ie Ignore the decimals).

When you reach the next waypoint you will be required to complete another simple calculation to find the final cache co-ords. On this sign you will find listed the individual times for each of the legs of the walking track which follows the river to this location from the SH1 road bridge.

  • The final cache is at: S 44 02.??? E 171 48.###
  • Where ??? = (Add the total of all 8 legs) x2 +2
  • Where ### = (Add the following legs, 1+4+8) +2

The final cache is less than 1km from the listed co-ords.

The cache is a 1 litre camo painted snaplock container and when placed contained the usual stash items along with the following swaps; Magic smiley ball, Rubber ducky, Adjustable spanner, Hand fridge magnet, Fishing lure, Ferrari keyring and a Mighty bean.

This cache should take about 1 hour. Keep an eye on young cachers!

SPECIAL NOTE: On August 4th '06 the mysterious Mid Canterbury "Black Panther" was sighted from this location, so keep your eyes peeled and have your camera ready.
