Bla'gard's Ruse 1 - Recovery Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Krypton: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Geocache Description:

Small pill bottle at an excellent viewpoint, where you can catch your breath. Sign only, with your own writing implement. Please replace carefully with its covering, so it is not readily visible to the large number of muggles passing by on this increasingly popular trail.

This is one of a series of caches along one of the more scenic trails in the South Bay. The trail is the Rhus Ridge trail to the top of Black Mountain. Park in the Rhus Ridge parking lot at N37o 21.121' W122o 8.273'. This is a small lot on Rhus Ridge Road, just off Moody Road behind Foothill College. It is best to come here very early in the morning, since this is a popular running and hiking trail, which means the lot is usually full by noon. Hike past the Caretaker’s house, up the trail, noting the “Bee Tree” at the first sharp bend. Visiting all caches in this series involves a hike of 5 miles and 2300 feet of elevation gain to the top. But it’s all downhill on the 5 mile return to the parking lot. Note that the scientific name for Poison Oak includes the word “Rhus”. If you use a little care and observation, you will avoid PO for this series. On much of this trail, you will not obtain WAAS assistance, and along many parts, canyon and canopy effects will reduce the accuracy of your fixes, unless you take care in using your receiver.

At the cache, there is an viewing area that on a good day allows a clear view from Mt. Tamalpais to the north, rising above the towers of San Francisco, to Mt. Diablo, to Mission Peak and Mt Rose to the east, Mt. Hamilton with the Lick Observatory domes, and south to Mt. Umunum and Loma Prieta Peak. Below lie Moffet Field with its huge hangers and wind tunnels and the Stanford Radio Dish.

Note that the closing time for the Open Space is one half hour after sunset.
