This is one of a series of caches along one of the more scenic
trails in the South Bay. The trail is the Rhus Ridge trail to the
top of Black Mountain. Park in the Rhus Ridge parking lot at
N37o 21.121' W122o 8.273'. This is a small
lot on Rhus Ridge Road, just off Moody Road behind Foothill
College. It is best to come here very early in the morning, since
this is a popular running and hiking trail, which means the lot is
usually full by noon. Visiting all caches in this series involves a
hike of 5 miles and 2300 feet of elevation gain to the top. But
it’s all downhill on the return to the parking lot. Note that the
scientific name for Poison Oak includes the word “Rhus”. If you use
a little care and observation, you will avoid PO for this series.
On much of this trail, you will not obtain WAAS assistance, and
along many parts, canyon and canopy effects will reduce the
accuracy of your fixes, unless you take care in using your
receiver.
Due to the excessive damage to the meadow of the original
placement, the container has been moved to a very similar location
110 meters away. At this location, you should see plenty of
satellites, including 2 of the WAAS birds. You can approach the
cache either from the main trail (a game trail just past the
minimum distance, close to the old location), or by following the
signed Hidden Villa trail to the ridge top (this latter is not
recommended for reasons that will become obvious when you approach
the cache location).
As you hike from “deer me” to this cache, be sure to enjoy the
wonderful vistas down into Rancho San Antonio and across San Jose
to the mountains beyond.
There are several clearings within 100 meters both above and below
the trail. The ones on the ridge crest are the result of the old
trail and fire break, and are used by youth groups from Hidden
Villa Youth Hostel for camping. They afford fine views of the Bay.
Please replace the micro as you find it, to minimize the
possibility of the youth groups locating it by accident.
Enjoy the views!
Note that the closing time for the Open Space is one half hour
after sunset.
