A very special reserve.
This beautiful bush reserve on the lower slopes of Mount Piriongia
is full of wonderful mature trees. The native undergrowth is thick,
and the canopy is mostly dense. Part of a historic Maori trail to
Kawhia passes through a corner of the reserve.
Walter Scott Reserve was donated to the Royal Forest and Bird
Society by sisters, Molly and Lillian Valder, who requested that it
be named after their neighbour, who enjoyed bush walking. From
Piriongia, head south towards Kawhia, taking Ngutunui Road.
Turn into Pekanui Road, then turning again into Scott Road (where
there are 5 letterboxes). Parking is available at the entrance to
the walking track.
PLEASE FOLLOW THE TRACKS AT ALL TIMES. This is native reserve, and
care should be taken to stay to the tracks, and not damage the
sensitive regenerating plant life.
Of interest, there is much moss, fungi and other smaller plants on
the track and at the edge. To access the cache, you will need only
to take ONE step off the track. Usual rule applies - leave nothing
in the bush but footprints, take nothing of the bush, but photos.
On entering the bush, you have the option of a longer walk
(1.5hours), a short loop (30mins) or direct to the cache (20 mins
return).
If you do not wish to enjoy the walkway, but just find the cache,
then take the right fork where the path divides. Shortly after
passing the rimu grove, you will arrive at a spot where there is a
great view of the mountains to the south.
From here take the new bypass route (due to a fallen tree) and the
cache is just a few minutes on. Of special note near the cache site
is the growth on the vines.
Cache is a small amno can.
