Geocache Description:

The cache is in an insulated white plastic flask wrapped in a black plastic bag, and placed in small cavity underneath a large limestone boulder, just below the ridge of Cwar y Gigfran at about 700 metres.

The location is approximately 2 miles walk in from the Forestry Commission car park at Blaen y Glyn, British Grid 056 176. Walk NE through the car park and onto the forestry road. After a short distance turn left on a track through the forest to come out onto the open hill facing Cwar y Gigfran ridge on the other side of the valley.
Alternatively, if you are more adventurous, you can start your walk from the Talybont Reservoir car park at British Grid 100 195 which is about 3.5 miles to the cache over Twyn Du and Carn Pica.

Please do not attempt this challenge unless you or one of your party have some experience as a hill walker, and you all have appropriate walking boots and clothing for the prevailing weather and conditions.
In areas the going can be very difficult with steep ascents and descents or boggy ground.

Close to the cache is a unique man made arch constructed of limestone slabs. The original purpose of the arch is not clear, maybe it was a Bronze Age sacrificial altar ?

On the 6th July 1942, Wellington Bomber No, R1465 took off from the Operational Training Unit at Wellesbourne Mountford, near Stratford upon Avon for a cross country flight training exercise.
In heavy cloud conditions the pilot appears to have decided to descend from his advised level of 10,000 ft, to try and fix his position, and in doing so, hit the summit of Waun Rydd in a flat high speed crash.
The crew, all Canadians, died in the crash, and are buried in Hereford.
A large amount of wreckage remains at the site which is a short distance from the cache. If you would like to visit the crash site and the adjacent small Canadian War Memorial, you will find the co-ordinates in the cache.
