This is an ammo box (aka “Geocache Object”) placed along the closed section of Monte Sano Boulevard. This section of the road used to be a main way into Monte Sano State Park, but, nearly 20 years ago, it was closed to auto traffic because of continued erosion problems.
There are a number of ways to get to this cache. When placing it, we parked where the barricades to automobile traffic are placed on Monte Sano Boulevard. From this point, you can walk (or bicycle) all the way to the Park along the old road, take a connector trail to the Flat Rock Trail, get on the Cold Springs Trail, or get on the Mountain Mist Trail. Some other unidentified but well used paths also lead off of the closed road. The walk to the cache from our parking spot was about 2/3 mile. When you get to the Park’s old “Welcome” sign (which could use just a little repair/touch-up), you are almost there.
