E: A visit to the historical place where the Battle of Ourique possibly happened
Memórias da Batalha de Ourique:
De um passado tão antigo que só chega até nós feito de histórias retalhadas, passadas de boca em boca através dos séculos, a lenda do milagre de Ourique é relembrada nos mais variados monumentos do concelho, como se pode verificar na Basílica Real ou na Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.
Reza a história que, na véspera da batalha, após um dia de exaustivos preparativos para a guerra, Afonso Henriques procurava descansar no silêncio da sua tenda quando foi visitado por um velho que, em nome de Jesus, o instruiu para que se afastasse do acampamento, sozinho.
Afonso Henriques assim fez e, num local isolado, apareceu-lhe um raio, iluminando uma portentosa cruz e o Cristo, rodeado de anjos. Disse-lhe Jesus que ele seria vencedor na batalha do dia seguinte e que seria aclamado rei.
Após terrível e demorada luta, o que restou do exército dos cinco reis mouros dispersou-se pela planície alentejana, concretizando-se o que, desde esse momento, foi considerado milagre divino e, para sempre, parte do imaginário popular de Castro Verde.
Afonso Henriques foi aclamado rei de Portugal e adoptou para o seu escudo cinco quinas, representando os cinco reinos derrotados. Já no século XVI, para assinalar a estrondosa vitória, Dom Sebastião mandou erguer a Ermida de São Pedro das Cabeças.
Ermida de São Pedro das Cabeças:
Ergue-se nos arredores de Castro Verde, no local onde se terá realizado a histórica Batalha de Ourique, onde Dom Afonso Henriques venceu as forças militares de cinco reinos mouros, após violenta batalha. Dom Sebastião, que a mandou construir em local ermo, quis assim homenagear a coragem do primeiro rei de Portugal.
Do século XVI, a ermida reflecte uma arquitectura religiosa popular e maneirista. O estilo barroco é visível no campanário e nas pinturas murais. De planta rectangular, possui uma só nave e capela-mor, tendo sido local de peregrinações.
Marco de inegável importância da nossa história, a sua maior beleza é a simplicidade das fachadas caiadas de branco, destacando-se na planície em redor, que a própria natureza vai matizando consoante as estações do ano.

E: Memories of the Battle of Ourique
Of such a distant past, which only reaches us through bits and pieces of tales transmitted from mouth to mouth over the ages, the legend of the miracle of Ourique is recalled in numerous mouments of the region, such as the Royal Basilica or the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.
The story tells that on the eve of the battle, after a day of exausting preparations for war, Afonso Henriques was trying to rest in the peace of his tent when he was visited by an old man who instructed him, in name of Jesus, to walk away from the camp, alone.
Afonso Henriques did this and, at an isolated spot, he saw a flash of lightning which illuminated an enormous cross and the figure of Christ, surrounded by angels. Jesus told him that he would win the following day´s fight and that he would be declared king.
After a terrible and lengthy fight, what remained of the five Moorish kings army was lost in the Alentejo plains, thus fulfilling what was considered, from them onwards, a divine miracle; forever part of the popular imaginary of Castro Verde.
Afonso Henriques was declared king of Portugal and he included five shields in his coat of arms, representing the five defeated kingdoms. To commemorate the outstanding victory, king Sebastian later ordered the construction of St Peter of the Heads Chapel.

The Ermida de São Pedro das Cabeças stands near Castro Verde, at the site where the historical Battle of Ourique, is supposed to have been fought, when king Afonso Henriques defeated the armies of five Moorish kingdoms, after a violent struggle. King Sebastian, who ordered the construction of the chapel in this lonely place, payed thus hommage to the courage of the first Portuguese monarch.
Dating from the 16th century, the chapel is an example of popular and Mannerist religious architecture. The Baroque style is visible in the bell-tower and the mural paintings. Of rectangular shape, it has a single nave and main chapel, and was once a place of pilrimage.
Marking an important feat of Portugal´s history, the chapel´s main beauty is the simplicity of its white-washed façades, rising above a plain that Nature itself colours with different shades according to the seasons.
