Geocache Description:

Family friendly scenic historical site. Recommend caching only during the day. Park closes at dusk. Look for the enterance gate upon entering the parking lot of city hall.

We figured this would be an appropriate place to hide a cache. As Tenney teachers it was important to pay homage to our geocaching namesakes. This is a beautiful site to see and we highly recommend taking some time to stroll around the grounds and use your imagination to envision what once stood at this site. After moving to New York, Charles Tenney and his wife retained their ties with Methuen, MA by building a magnificent summer home, "Grey Court" on top of what had been previously known as Jones Hill. In 1882, Tenney began surveying the hill, building walls and opening roads. In April 1882, he purchased the Whittier House which was remodeled as a gate house. Additional property was aquired for the estate, which eventually totaled 75 acres. Grey Court overlooked Methuen until it was destroyed by arson in 1978. Although the burned out shell was for the most part demolished in 1985, its few remaining ruins are indicative of the elegance and fine material of the original house. Tenney's was one of three great turn of the century estates in Methuen along with those of Edward Searles and David Nevins. In 1951 the Tenney family gave the town 26 acres of the estate for the Tenney High School.Ground breaking for the school took place on March 26, 1952. Dedication of the school, which cost $1,552,955 to build, took place on December 15, 1953. The Tenney High School as it was first known is now the Tenney Grammar School.
