Geocache Description:

This is at least a 5 mile hike, depending on where you start. It goes through some of the most serene trails in the forest. If you're a runner or hiker, and enjoy the solitude and peacefulness of the deep forest, you can't beat this route.

Hoffman's Historic Site. This was a large camp consisting of about 25 buildings plus a 120-foot bunkhouse with showers and washrooms. The camp was named after its superintendent, Louis Hoffman, and his wife, the camp cook. The area was being logged.

Now all you can see are the remains of a series of wood buildings.

The signal can be really tough to get, so start looking when you see the wood buildings.

It is not among the buildings, rather it is inside another cathedral of Redwood Trees. The Cathedrals are formed when a Redwood is chopped down, and a ring of younger trees pop up in circular fashion around the original tree.

The location is also near the confluence of several major trail systems, a Ridge Connection trail, which goes up to the West Ridge trail, and the Loma Prieta grade trail. You can go up the trail, turn right, and on up to Sand Spit Overlook. From there the possibilities include going down the fire road, or taking White Lagoon Road down to the Big Slide Trail and Aptos creek trail. If you turn left, you head down the West Ridge trail. If you stay on the trail, you head down the Loma Prieta grade, or go up towards the Historic Bridge site, and Maple Falls.

Here is a short list of caches that can be checked out on a hike coming in from Aptos.
This is a fantastic place to hike in the heat of the summer when the rest of the world is sweltering.

If you want a killer hike, and haven’t gotten any of these, I’d suggest picking these up in this order. Plan 3 or 4 hours to hike this loop. Park at: N37° 00.865 W121° 54.319, the last parking spot open during the summer. During the winter, I suggest making it a drive, bicycle, hike trip. The road gets closed earlier, so after parking, take your bicycle as near as possible to the Nisene Troll, lock up your bike, and hike.
