Easy half-mile hike to an ammo can in the Stone Arch Bridge
conservation land in Westford, MA. Kid-friendly. Short bushwhacking
required.
Trailhead parking is on Cold Spring Road in Westford near the
intersection of Pine Ridge Road (N42 34.973 W71 27.880).
Hike through some very tall pines to a meadow. This is the start of
the Russell Bird Sanctuary. Your GPS will lock here if the big
pines were giving you problems. Use the trail around the meadow
(watch for poison ivy/thorns on the edge) and you'll end up on a
wide, main trail back in the woods. This is an old railbed.
Turn onto a side trail when appropriate. The cache is a short
uphill bushwhack off this trail.
You may need to use a bit of stealth here, as lots of people use
this area for sight-seeing and dog-walking. As you approach GZ,
you'll be on top of a hill, and near some scenic viewpoints where
people might congregate. They might be curious about you. Please
just try not to draw too much attention to yourself.
Afterwards, feel free to continue north down the main rail-trail to
the Stone Arch Bridge (N42 35.310 W71 28.340). It's a gorgeous
mortarless bridge built in 1872 and very much worth a look. It also
makes a good picnic spot at the bottom.
There have been several attempts to place caches closer to the
bridge, but mugglings have been a problem.
Enjoy!
