About Veszprém: Veszprém is a quiet, modest town. You have to pay attention to it, roam its streets and squares, listen to its bells and watch its facades and buildings to understand its unique atmosphere. Since the castle is in the centre, you cannot lose your way. Discover the Town of Queens!

Afterwards the current Hungarian Queen became the patroness of St. Michael's Cathedral and, owing to this, the Bishop of Veszprém received the prerogative to crown the Hungarian queens. This is why we call Veszprém the Town of Queens.

The town of Veszprém is situated in the Transdanubian part of Hungary, on the border of two regions, between the Bakony Hills and the Balaton-uplands. Veszprém is built on a ridge. The Brook Séd divides the land into low hills, and that is why the town is said to be built on seven hills: Várhegy (Castle Hill), Benedek-hegy (St. Benedict Hill), Jeruzsálem-hegy (Jerusalem Hill), Temetohegy (Cemetery Hill), Gulyadomb (Herd Hill), Kálvária-domb (Calvary Hill) and Cserhát. Twisting, narrow streets, tiny houses and flowery gardens are the main characteristics of the town

The conquesting Hungarians settled here, it was occupied by the state founding Árpád dinasty, and because of its strategically high importance, many battles were fought here by the Turks and 'kuruc' people (Hungarians rebbelling against the Habsburgs in the 18th century). Royalties had churches and schools built here, talented and devoted artisans saw the importance of solving water supply in the Castle, or of enabling the poor families' children to have the chance to learn, or to have a theatre built in the Bishop's Garden. The past tells its stories all over Veszprém, on the Szentháromság (Holy Trinity) Square in the Castle, under Benedek Hill at the ruins of princess St Margaret's first cloister, on the Viaduct bridge, and in Betekints Valley where a thousand years ago Greek nuns owned the first centre of the town. From the 13th century on, Veszprém has been a student town with its schools and university. At the same time, it has been a town of arts, with its theatres, ensembles, creative artists, that surprise us from day to day.
