Geocache Description:

public city park in Rome

Villa Sciarra is a public park in the city of Rome, nested above the Gianicolo hill above Trastevere and in the Monteverde district. It can be easily reached on foot from Trastevere. It has several entrances. One entrance is in front of the international hospital Salvator Mundi. Another entrance is at intersection of Via Nicola Fabrizi and Via Calandrelli.

The villa is a quaint example of late 800's garden, with fake romain ruins. Trees include a line of palm trees, cedar of lebanon. It hosts an institute of germanic studies. The villa was purchased on May 15 1902 by Giorgio Wurts, an american with a passion for gardens, and by his wife Henrietta Tower, a wealthy lady from Philadelphia. The Wurts moved into the villa the statues that date back to the 1700's that came originally from a castle near Bergamo, the Castello Visconti di Brignano d'Adda. The statues found in the villa symbolize the months of the calendar, Apollo and Daphne, Pan and Siringa, Diana and Endimione. There is a large aviary ("uccelliera"), a grotto ("ninfeo"). On the downhill portion of the villa there is a small castle with medieval architectonic elements, soon to become a Mathematics Museum. In 1930, after the death of her husband, Henrietta Wurts dave the villa as a gift to Benito Mussolini on condition that it be used as a public park.

Cache is a plastic food container. I reccomend starting from the higher area of the park to get a good signal, then working your way towards it. Foliage canopy may reduce your signal, and you may find a fence pretty close to the cache, but you can walk along it on a long walk-around it to eventually reach the cache from below the hill. The cache is rated 2.5 due to possible signal loss because of the canopy. Spent time choosing the best possible mark, and tested the coordinatates from different approaches.

Gastone was a fellow who had a merry-go-round and other kids games in nearby fields.

[roman slang description]
