Geocache Description:

Located by the Coldstream Cemetery off of Howe Drive (off of Kalamalka Lake Road), this regular cache is a theme cache of jewelry. It contains the usual logbook, pencil and geocache info, as well as bracelets, rings & necklaces, some chains, some charms, some beads etc. Please stick to the trading theme if possible. Access to the cache is through the unlocked gate beside the cemetery.

Originally I wanted to put a cache at the vicinity of the Earthquest program’s Kekuli campground. Over the past 15 years, students from this program at Vernon Secondary School would build kekulis or pit houses here and camp in them. Here they also learned other First Nation skills such as basket weaving and beadwork, and some did totem pole carving. Just before putting out the cache last fall, however, vandals set fire to one of the kekuli’s so I decided to wait until this summer to hide the cache. Unfortunately, it was also decided by "the powers to be" to remove these kekulis and fill the pits in as it was a potential fire threat to the surrounding trees on Coldstream Ranch, the Cemetery, and nearby Kalamalka Park.

Consequently, I have put the cache near the path to this area as it is by the very old Coldstream Cemetery which is also a hidden gem. Check out some of the old headstones in the cemetery if you have time.

After finding the cache if you go to the coords as listed below, you will see on your way (the higher area) where the kekulis were and a totem pole that had been erected, but now lies on the ground. When I used to take the kids to check out the kekulis we would see wild rabbits running around here! The coords take you to the vicinity of the creek where a remaining pit and an unfinished totem pole are.

Note: The road gate to the cemetery is sometimes closed in the evenings (not sure of schedule, but I think winter closure is 4pm, spring is 6pm and summer is 8pm), but the walk in is short. Stay on road until you get to the cemetery and use the small gate on the left.

Additional Hints (Encrypt)

At side of clump of birch inside birch camo sleeve and covered with bark. Please replace the birch log leaning against it so it doesn't blow down.
