Oakenshaw Wildlife Reserve has a complex of ponds, walkways and
dipping platforms and is used as an open-air classroom by schools
in the area. After Tony Blair, before he was Prime Minister, planted
a tree to mark its opening in 1996, the reserve won a Durham County
Council environment award and was the only project in the country
to be accepted for the nationwide Millennium Mark Challenge.
We were originally going to put one cache here but placed a
second cache to encourage cachers to have a venture around the
area. From the parking area head up the main path, as you reach a
fork in the path take the left one and head up towards the
ponds.
Remember to take some bread for the ducks. Please also note that
this area is a Nature Reserve and the rules of the nature reserve
must be observed at all times. H J Banks asks that you all respect
the area.
