Benchmark recovery is a fun, fascinating, and at times frustrating
subgenre of the geocaching game. It’s full of terminology and
tricks all its own. There are two kinds of coordinates provided -
those described as ‘adjusted’ on the listing are very
accurate, but the coordinates described as ‘scaled’ can
be off by as much as a quarter-mile! When the coordinates are
listed as ‘scaled,’ the recovery notes provided (see
below) are the best way to hunt down that elusive marker. It can be
challenging to look for old marks, as the descriptions may be vague
or often refer to physical objects no longer found in the area. If
you enjoy sleuthing and old historical records & maps, and are
good at following directions, you might just be a good benchmark
hunter…
This cache gives you a mild exercise in following previous recovery
notes to find the mark. You’ll benefit from using the
benchmark resources on the geocaching.com website, as well as
looking at the photos and the waypoints provided.
Do not attempt this journey unless you're competent at off-trail
navigation in wooded/marshy areas.
A compass (independent of your GPS) is recommended. As portions of
the trip are in wet areas, knee-high boots and a head net are
helpful in the non-winter months. Please replace cache in elevated
location as shown in gallery. Moose, bear and coyotes are
frequently seen in this area. Keep children and dogs close to you,
and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Keep the search challenging for others - don't post photos which
give away the actual location of the cache with your log on this
server. I reserve the right to delete logs which don't follow
this directive. Good luck!

Snowshoed past several other fine caches on our way to this one. If I'd researched this one a bit, I could have looked for it in late summer. But this afternoon snowshoe following a few ski tracks through powder was fine. We didn't have Tom's PN40 today, so we had to use my almost discharged Palm and my almost failing memory of cache placement related to the benchmark coordinates to get to GZ. Once I saw the meadow, I was pretty sure we were home free even with the benchmark buried. Tom traded swag for a TB and then we searched for the benchmark under the watchful eyes and raucous calls of a nearby Raven. TFTC.

Nice snowshoe throuogh the falling snow on a warm winter's day. Blazingsnowshoepathways and I followed from point to point and came up with the cache. Unfortunately we did not come up with the benchmark so we will be back when there is less snow on the ground. TFTC.

Well, we have dwelled on this cache for some time now, and decided it was time to tackle it. I reached waaaay back into my Boy Scout days, going for my Eagle Scout rank. I remembered a navigation method the scoutmaster called triangulation. So I set out a topographic map and made some marks with a compass (the circle making type, not the north pointing type). Where the circles crossed paths was to be the approximate location of the cache and benchmark. With that information, we hit the trails and when we get close to my calculated spot, we find an animal trail mentioned in the benchmark description, and then the cache and benchmark came into view. Wow, success, triangulation really works! What a great exercise in benchmarking. We really enjoyed this adventure, We left a TB. TNSL. TFTC!!!

Found it at 1610. Cache is in great shape, contents dry. Took nothing, left a two-pence piece. I recommend from personal experience, that if you look for this one in the next couple of weeks wear breakup boots or hip waders. The trail has quite a bit of standing water on it and you'll have to wade a bit when you head off-trail. Also, if you are in a bit of a hurry, I recommend you come in from the west, rather than from the east like I did (it's a lot shorter and much, much drier). Finally, the skeeters are pretty bad. Was actually looking for a benchmark and found the cache. Fun hike! TFTC!

Found on a perfect early winter day. Crunchy ground, crisp air, and a grassless forest. More new trails for me. I've been so self-sheltered. Thanks again NorWes for introducing me to yet another new(for me)trail system. Will attempt that free lunch deal on a future "clean-up" run. TFTC!!
