Geocache Description:

Located along the pipeline from Spruce Hill Lake to Chain Lakes

The formation of the Water Company in 1844 led to the building of the
Halifax water works in 1848 and to the provision of fresh drinking water
from Long Lake and Chain Lakes to the residents of Halifax. It was also the
beginning of a gradual loss of land and income over the next one hundred
years for landowners in Spryfield, Harritsfield and Goodwood.By 1868 the
City of Halifax needed more water and greater water pressure. Landowners in
the area of Fose's Lake and Sprucehill Lake in Harritsfield were affected
when a dam was needed to raise the water level of Spruce Hill Lake by ten
feet. The land between these two lakes was flooded and one lake prevailed. A
pipeline was built from Sprucehill lake to Chain Lake. George Hartlen,
followed by his son,John, were caretakers at Spruce Hill lake dam from 1880's
until John's death in 1940. In 1954 the Umlah and Dart farms on the Old St
Margaret's Bay Road were entirely expropriated for watershed.Remnants of
both farms may still be seen along the old road. In 1976, Long Lake and
Sprucehill Lake were taken out of the watershed. It now makes up Long Lake
Provincial Park. Thank you to Iris Shea for providing background
information. The cache is located 2.57 km from parking co-ordinates
N44'35.092 W 063'38.532. The trail over the 'Pipeline' can be challenging
when wet.The hoist appears to have been constructed on site and job
specific.
The cache when placed had a construction theme with a Bike repair kit;cement
truck;boom truck;ladder truck;sparklers;waterproof matches;hand warmer;first
aid kit;geo pencil & a $2.00 Tim's certificate
