Geocache Description:

This multi-cache is located in and around the subdivision of Kildare on the Port Hills.

The subdivision was developed a few years ago. Sections were promoted with outstanding views over Christchurch and the estuary to the distant mountains from Kaikoura to Mt Hutt. You can easily walk between two waypoints and the cache enjoying the expansive views as you walk.

The coordinates S43° 34.097 E172° 43.665 for the first waypoint will take you to the entrance of the subdivision. At his waypoint you are required to find a camo pill container. Inside you will find the south co-ordinate for the cache.

The second waypoint S43°33.756 E172° 43.972 will take you to ‘Mary Gregg Steps’ with great views of Shag Rock. These steps provide a shortcut connecting two lanes. There is no public parking in these lanes. Here you are required to find a key container attached to a post beside one of the 153 steps. Inside you will find the east co-ordinate for the cache. Muggles we met on the steps said no one seems to know who Mary Gregg is. If you have any information about this lady please let us know who she was in your log.

The co-ordinates can be found in any order but you will need both.

The coordinates for the cache will take you to a scenic spot with great views in a public reserve. After rain, water tumbles over the rocks in a nearby creek. In a dry summer the creek bed will dry up. Access to the cache is by way of a track, unsuitable for strollers and bikes, leading from a cul-de-sac between the first two way points. Cabbage trees mark the entrance to the track. There are other access points worth exploring above and below the cache site. The cache is within reach beside the track. It is dangerous to leave the track and not necessary.

When hidden the cache was a 1.15 litre camo snaplock container. The contents included log book, stash note, pencil, pencil sharpener. If you are as old as I am you will have no trouble remembering the TV series Dr Kildare. With this in mind the cache has a First Aid theme. The swaps are all of a First Aid nature eg safety pins, plasters, rubber gloves etc. There is a prize – a small first aid kit for the FTF.
