The cache is located near a bend in the huge Oahe Reservoir. Deer
and Blue Herons are among the wildlife seen in the summer. Geese
and Pheasants are also plentiful in the fall.
The nearby small bluff overlooking this 200 mile long lake
provides a panoramic view 8 miles SW and then as the river curves 8
miles to the NW. Six miles to the NW some flat lands were the site
of Fort Sully. Besides providing great recreation opportunities for
the region, the lake provides a huge amount of electrical energy
for the central plains, and a supply of fresh drinking water for
many communities along its shores.
Do not cross any fences or climb down the bank.
The cache is on South Dakota State Park controlled property and
hence a “SD State Park Permit” needs to be paid for
access. The fee is $3 per person, or $5 per vehicle; or $23 per
season. See (visit link) to verify annual
“license” fee. The license may be obtained as one
enters from the Cow Creek road where an unmanned licensing station
exists just east of the boat ramp parking lot.
Hunting is allowed in the area. Information can be found on the
web at: (visit link)
