I love maps. There's something wonderful about holding a map in
your hands and studying its intricate details. Before I owned a
GPSr and started using electronic maps, I would spread everything
out on the kitchen table and spend hours pouring over maps of the
places I wanted to visit. You could never have enough maps!
One day a few weeks ago, in a fit of nostalgia, I decided to
pull out my paper maps and plan a trip. They were dusty and
wrinkled, but I quickly felt that old familiarity returning...a
road trip with paper maps! How quaint!
Well, the day didn't turn out exactly the way I thought it
would. I should have realized things were going to go seriously
wrong when, before even leaving my driveway, I noticed that my
first paper map didn't even have the right name on it.
'Redwood Point!?!', I thought to myself, 'I live in Redwood
Shores. This map must be out of date.'
In spite of this uncertain start, I bravely set out from my
point of origin, visiting the following places, in order:
- Livermore
- Lathrop
- Diablo
- Vernalis
- La Costa Valley
- Clifton Court Forebay
- Jersey Island
- Cordelia
After several stops, I gave up on being able to tell exactly
where I was. It was just too tough to figure out. I longed for
hypnotic beeps and reassuring instructions from my GPSr. At the end
of the day, completely lost, I stopped to ask for directions.
The first person I ran into smiled and said, 'You've come the
the right place!'
You're looking for a bison tube. It's located on public
property, but I'd suggest only visiting during business
hours.
