Geocache Description:

V priebehu rokov jej cinnosti sa okruh uloh Univerzitnej kniznice rozšíril o výskum a spracovanie rukopisov a starých tlací, bohato zastúpených vo fondoch knižnice.

Klarisky dali budovu kláštora opravit a v 14. storocí postavili kostol.

The initial coordinates bring you to the University library

The University library has undergone a thorough reconstruction which was finished in 2005. The library is not just a library but it is devoted to restoration of old manuscripts. One of the collections the University library owns are the oriental manuscripts and prints known as Bašagic collection which were later registered in the list of UNESCO Memory of the World. The library is an official depository library of UN and UNESCO in Slovakia.

The Clariseum – the complex of buildings of a previous convent and church of Clares became the first residence of the library. The library was gradually provided with two historical objects: the Palace of Hungarian Chamber and the Palace of Leopold de Pauli.

Clariseum is situated at the place of the oldest monastery in Bratislava. The convent originally belonged to the Cistercian nuns who settled in the town during the first half of 13th century. At the end of 13th century the convent started to be occupied by the nuns of the Order of Poor Clares. The Clares started reconstruction on the convent and in the 14th century they built the church. The church repeatedly burned down and was damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century. After the nuns moved, the building became state property and was reconstructed for the Royal Academy and the Catholic Grammar School.A corporation had provided a part of the premises to a new library of the Hungarian Elizabethan University that operated there until 1919. In October 1919 the premises of Clariseum were taken over by the state administration of the Czechoslovak Republic and became the residency of the Comenius University Library today the University Library in Bratislava.

The Palace of Hungarian Chamber was established in the 18th century on the place of old burgher houses. The Hungarian Chamber operated in the palace until the year 1782 when it was dissolved. In the course of 1802–1848 the palace housed the Hungarian Diet.

The Palace of Leopold de Pauli was built on the place of medieval burgher house, which was mentioned in the historical sources in the 15th century. The family of de Pauli and the future owners of the palace lived in the front wing; the back wing was for rent. In the 20th century the all palace became an apartment house.
