In the 1880's & 1890's the Government encouraged small scale
farmers to settle & develop the land.
A series of small farm bocks was established by the Wanganui
Small Farms Association.
The Pemberton Small Farm Settlement was laid out in 1885 and the
land was subdivided into 100-200 acre (40.5-81 hectare) blocks.
The settlement spurred the establishment of a General Store with
a Post Office and Bank, Blacksmith Shop, Butchers Shop, Boarding
House and even a Cricket Club.
As with many other small settlements however, farm amalgamation
and the growth of more favourably located sites elsewhere saw the
decline of Pemberton.
