This is a moderate hike that will take you to a scenic overlook on Mt. Cabot. A clear day produces spectacular views of Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson, and Mt. Washington on the right side of the view and Mt. Moriah and the Carter Range on the left side.
Start at the beginning of the Austin Brook Trail on North Road in Shelburne, NH. (44.24.755 071.04.075). Go about 1/3 mile to the junction of the yellow trail and turn right towards Philbrook Farm. Cross Austin Brook and continue on the yellow trail to 44.24.760 071.03.449. You will cross Millbrook Road right after the brook crossing and a logging road about 1/4 mile after that. Stay on the yellow trail until you reach the coordinates above and don't be misled by yellow boundry markers closely spaced on the left. When you reach the coordinates, a small unmarked path leads off to the left. Follow this until the red trail junction at 44.24.684 071.03.271. There is an old galvanized bucket hanging in a tree at the junction. Turn left on the red trail and head uphill until you reach 44.24.914 071.03.204. Turn left and cross the brook continuing on the red trail. Watch for an abrupt right turn off the logging road at 44.25.073 071.03.104. The trail winds and then steepens to the summit of Mt. Cabot at 44.25.274 071.02.676. Look for the old foundation of a camp at the summit. Please leave undisturbed as this is part of Philbrook Farms/Shelburne history. Work your way to the scenic overlook to the right of the summit at 44.25.261 071.02.707. The cache is a well hidden ammo box which contains a ladies watch, special caribiner, yo-yo, package of scented candles, hand warmer, frog key ring and a sudoku book. You do not need to climb down any cliffs or steep drop offs to locate the cache.
