Geocache Description:

Pirate's Gold

Caching in Delaware? Visit the Delaware Geocachers Website!

Yes I am a Pirate,
Two hundred years too late,
The cannons don’t thunder,
There’s nothing to plunder,
I’m an over 40 victim of fate,
Arriving too late, arriving too late.

From “A Pirate Looks at Forty” by Jimmy Buffet

It’s NOT too late and even though the cannons don’t thunder much anymore, there’s still treasure to plunder. For all of you “Pirates at Heart” out there, here is your cache. It has a treasure map with a hidden clue, a treasure chest, and “gold doubloons.” Break out your cutlass, eye patch, parrot, bottle of rum, and “mateys” and dig into this treasure hunt!

It has been rumored for many years that pirates have hidden some of their “spoils” on the beaches and shores of southern Delaware. Lewes had a checkered association with pirates along the Atlantic seaboard in the late 1600s. Pirates raided the town in 1690 and 1698. Finally, a law was passed requiring all citizens to own a musket and ammunition for protection from future raids. Legend also has it that the famous pirate, Captain Kidd, buried a chest of gold in the Cape Henlopen sand dunes during a visit in 1700 on his trip to the West Indies.

Here is your chance to join in the hunt for “Pirate’s Gold.” The first thing you might notice is that the coordinates place you in the Delaware Bay. You must use the treasure map (this web page) and your cunning to locate a hidden clue. The clue will give you a correction for the N & W coordinates. For both of the coordinates, subtract the amounts in the clue from the posted coords. Once you get the new coordinates, begin your search for the “treasure.” This treasure chest is a regular size Lock & Lock container with pirate booty including “gold doubloons.” Look for special coins for FTF, STF, and TTF as well as a listing on the “treasure map.” If you trade items, please keep it pirate themed.

SPECIAL NOTE: For all you pirates whose “home port” is too distant or “favorable winds” won’t carry you to Lewes, you can join in on the hunt for the hidden clue. If you find the hidden clue, you are more than welcome to log your discovery as a note (not a find), but you must email me the correct coordinates for the “treasure.” The first three log notes indicating a “hidden clue find” (along with a supporting email) also get a listing on the “treasure map.”

Remember the “pirate’s code”: Concerning the treasure map’s “hidden clue” or the “gold doubloons” treasure, you are sworn to secrecy! Any log entries with spoilers or hints will be “deep six’d” to Davey Jones Locker faster than you can raise the “skull & crossbones” flag! Please use your best pirate's stealth when retrieving the "treasure."

Please re-hide in the same spot & good luck to all you buccaneers!
