Unter dem
Einfluss von Wasser, Wind und Temperaturschwankungen zerfallen
selbst sehr feste Gesteine in größere oder kleinere
Teile oder werden zersetzt. Dieser Vorgang ist maßgebend
für die Bildung von Sedimentschichten.
Zu diesen gehören auch die Quarzsand-Lagerstätten, die
von großer wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung sind. Sande sind
Endprodukte der verschiedenen Verwitterungsprozesse und wurden in
fast allen Formationen der Erdgeschichte gebildet.
Quarzsandvorkommen mit hohem Reinheitsgrad sind jedoch
selten.
Bei den obigen Koordinaten befindet sich ein Aussichtpunkt mit
einer Informationstafel. Diese Tafel enthält zahlreiche
Information über das Quarzsand-Vorkommen in Frechen. Es wird
u.a. erklärt, für welche Produkte Quarzsand
benötight wird. Wusstest du, dass Glas zu 70 % aus Quarzsand
besteht? Des Weiteren erfährst du einiges über das
Abbaugebiet in Quarzsand hier in Frechen. Die im frühen
Miozän entstandenen Frechener Quarzsande werden seit 1884
abgebaut. Heute sind im Tagebau moderne Schaufelradbagger auf zwei
Strossen im Einsatz. Der mittels Aufstromklassierung aufbereitete
Quarzsand wird in verschiedene Sorten getrennt, die als Feucht-
oder Trockensande zur Auslieferung gelangen.

Under the
influence of water, wind and temperature variation, even the
hardest rocks break down into larger or smaller pieces. This
process is a dominant factor in the formation of sediment
layers.
Quartz sand deposits are a type of sediment layer of great economic
significance. Sand is the final product of the various weathering
processes and was created in nearly all formations during the
earth's history. Very pure quartz sand deposits are, however,
rare.
At the coordinates above you can find viewpoint with an information
panel. The information table gives you lot of information about the
quartz sand in Frechen. It explains, for which products quartz sand
is used. Do you know, that glass consists of 70 % quartz sand?
Furthermore you learn a lot about the current production area of
quartz sand in Frechen. The quartz sand, which was deposited during
the Miocene Period, has been extracted here since 1884. Today,
modern bucket-wheel excavators are used on two banks in an open-pit
operation. Quartz sand, after undergoing an upcurrent sizing
process, is sorted into different types which are shipped either as
wet or dry sand.
