This Earth-cache is located on the Navajo Loop in Bryce Canyon
National Park Services. On Tuesday May 23, 2006 the National Park
Service closed the “Wall Street” portion due to rocks and debris
making the trail impassable from a partial collapse of the
surrounding canyon walls.
Bryce Canyon is a small National Park Service located in
southwestern Utah. The park was named after Ebenezer Bryce, a
Pioneer of the Mormon Faith and became a National Park in 1924. The
unique geology of Bryce is famous for its “horseshoe-shaped”
amphitheaters carved into the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Frost-wedging
and rainwater has shaped the richly colored limestone of the Claron
Formation into interesting shapes including slot canyons, windows
and spires. The Claron Formation was formed sixty million
years ago by sedimentary deposits collecting in a large lake. These
sediments ranging from limestone, siltstone, sandstone and some
conglomerate created the “Claron Formation.” Uplifting and faulting
caused the massive blocks now called the Paunsagunt and Aquarius
Plateaus which were eroded by streams. The cracks and jointing
produced by the uplifting determine the location of the walls,
arches, windows and natural bridges of Bryce Canyon. Also
contributing to the shaping of these structures and the tall
spires is the varying hardness of the rock layers. The Navajo
Loop trail is one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy it as much as
my family and I did. To log this EarthCache: Since the 2 large
rocks are now gone, I would like you to email me the name of the
tall spires that adorn Bryce Canyon and the Navajo Loop. I
also want you to post a picture of yourself or someone in your
group with the gps somewhere beautiful along the trail. and another
picture (or pictures) of some of the beautiful views along the way.
Also send me the name of who's hammer is at the end of the Navajo
Loop. (requirement after 11/25/07)
