Ice House Ruins: Lowest Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dippedidooda: Land owner (HCC) was understandably concerned about the sensitivity of the site- and took away the container before any discussions about an altered placement further away. A new cache attracts so many more visitors than just altering cache placement. Regardless, you only have to read the logs to see how people have appreciated it. Oh well, I gave up.

Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at the lowest of the icehouse ruins that were used from the 1850’s to the 1890’s. The icehouses had thick walls and brushwood roofing; they were packed with snow during the winter which froze into ice and this was carved into blocks and taken to Hobart by horse.

The lowest icehouse ruins are the least prominent, but they can all be reached by parking at the top side car park at The Springs. Walk up the stairs on the right side of the site of the old Springs Hotel and you will come to a T-junction. Turn left on to the Milles Track and after 5 minutes branch uphill to the right at the signed junction of the Ice House Track.

The track goes up steeply and it can be quite slippery after rain. The weather can change quickly, so go prepared with warm and protective clothing for all weather conditions, regardless of season.

The cache is a small regular container. Satellite coverage is very poor once you go down into the big dip/hole at the side of the track. This is the inside of the ruin and you will notice the stonework at the back and sides. There is cutting grass around so be careful.
Once you step down into it, the cache is on your immediate left not straight ahead which would be the rear wall. It is above the large base rock of that mossy (left) wall. It is behind a clump of dead foliage, in behind the rock(location given so the ruin isn't dismantled!)
