Geocache Description:

A Multi-part offset cache race around the town of Sudbury based on the CBS adventure series.

April 2022 Update:  The "Over the River" route marker has gone M.I.A. because the kiosk it was hiding in has been rebuilt. The "Through the Woods" route marker has been inspected and is still in its place.  When it comes time to choose "Over the River" or "Through the Woods", you'll choose "Through the Woods".   More info below.

March 2017 Update: The cache is now re-located 75 feet southeast of the final cache coordinates you'll calculate. When your GPS gets you to "0 feet", look southeast, about 75 feet, for a pretty obvious landmark. The original cache, hidden in 2006, along with its hiding place, were recently destroyed as part of the SVT's forest management activities in the area. Trails are well marked getting to the cache area, but the area has a new, bewildering look, if you've been here before. GPS reception is much improved in the cache area now.

2006: Enjoying geocaching seems to be a natural for getting addicted to the CBS series “The Amazing Race”, now in its 10th season (as of late-2006). The adventure show has contestants traveling tens of thousands of miles around the world, experiencing exotic locations and geocache-like clues during the course of their “race”. Our cache, “The Amazing (Sudbury) Race”, offers contestants a chance to race around the town of Sudbury, in at least two forms of transportation, your car and your feet, with exotic (not really, but it sounds good) locations to experience along the way. We don’t have the $1 million prize to award, as the show does, but the satisfaction of finding the “Pit Stop” at the end of your race should be almost as good. When logging in your find back here, please be very generic with information you gathered on the route-markers, Pit Stop and locations you were at, so that racers coming along after you will have as much fun solving the cache riddles as you will. For added enjoyment, read the rest of this description in the voice/accent of Phil Keoghan, New Zealand native and host of “The Amazing Race”. You’ll need no cash for any leg of the race (unless you stop at Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, pizza places, etc. which are along your route). Now….. if you’re ready, get your GPS, pencil and paper, trading items, and thinking cap. Travel safely, stay within the posted speed limits, enjoy the adventure, and …..GO!

FAST-FORWARD: Teams must first make their way to the route-marker at: N42 21.798, W71 24.977 and find the memorial statue and the building behind it. The memorial is a gift of Sam, dated May 30, “xxxx”. The building behind the statue was erected in A.D. “yyyy”.

ROAD BLOCK: Teams must now make their way by car, 3.1 miles, where they’ll find a route-marker with historical dates and information on it. The building adjoining the route-marker is famous in American lore (as you’ll discover) and “arrived” at this site about 80 years ago. Use your answers from the Fast Forward to solve the following formulas to find this route-marker. N 42 21.(xxxx minus 1371) W 71.28.(yyyy minus 1600) Once you find this route-marker, note the years of birth (aaaa) and death (bbbb), as well as the first (cccc) and last (dddd) years the adjoining structure was in active use. You’ll need this information to find your next clue.

DETOUR: Over-the-River or Through-the-Woods: In this detour teams will choose to travel to one of two route markers, each containing the final clue to the location of the Pit Stop. There are small, dirt parking lots available at both Over-the-River and Through-the-Woods, with nearby trailheads. APRIL 2022 UPDATE:  Just go to "Through the Woods".   The "Over the River" route marker has been, sadly, destroyed.

Over-the-River: [APRIL 2022 - The Route Marker clue at the kiosk has gone missing. DO NOT drive yourself to "Over the River. Use "Through the Woods", below, instead]. In “Over-the-River”, teams will first drive themselves less than two miles, to find their final clue at a wooden kiosk. While “Over-the-River” provides a shorter walk to the Pit Stop, as brief as 15 minutes, it requires good navigational skills. Your GPS might not point you to the best route at all times. The trail(s) will take you to within 75 feet of the Pit Stop. While not physically demanding, there are opportunities to take a wrong trail and lose time finding the Pit Stop. “Over-the-River” route-marker coordinates are: N 42 22.(aaaa minus 1237) W 71 27.(bbbb minus 1553)

Through-the-Woods: In “Through-the-Woods”, teams will first drive themselves over one mile to find their final clue at a wooden kiosk. While “Through-the-Woods” involves fewer trail intersections and decision-making, there is more walking required to get to the Pit Stop. No need to cut across private property, swamps, etc. though at times your GPS might advise otherwise. The trail(s) will take you to within 50 feet of the Pit Stop. Trails are wide and well-marked, but there are some dense woods en route, which may cause your GPS to lose signal, costing you time in reaching the Pit Stop. “Through-the-Woods” route-marker parking coordinates are: N 42 22.(cccc minus 1516) W 71.27. (dddd minus 1114)

PIT STOP: The Pit Stop is a smallish plastic container, hidden about 100-feet south of a trail. Little bushwhacking is required. The first team to reach the Pit Stop wins FTF bragging rights. The Pit Stop has been seeded with some trackable items, a deck of airplane identification cards, key ring and log book and pencils. Please close and cammo securely when you're finished. The last team to arrive at the Pit Stop MAY be eliminated !!
