Located in the southeast corner of Cumberland County on the western
outskirts of Millville, Union Lake was created by the damming of
the Maurice and Mill Rivers. This oblong lake covers 898 acres and
is 4.0 miles long and 1.2 miles at its widest point. The state
acquired the lake in the early 1990s and it is now a Fish and
Wildlife Management Area. As at many other waterways in the state,
Native American artifacts have been found here. Bottom sediment
consists primarily of tan sand, mud, and some gravel, except near
the launch site around the dam, where it is shored up with
trucked-in rocks. The average lake depth is 14 feet, with deeper
pockets to 30 feet near the dam. Most coves have shallow margins,
which are only two to four feet deep, perfect for a refreshing
swim. Close to shore, you’ll find aquatic grasses piercing
the water’s surface between water lily pads. In recent years,
tires and Christmas trees have been used to create artificial
habitats. This effort provides key places for juvenile fish to hide
from larger predators, thereby helping to increase fish
populations. Numerous islands, coves, and peninsulas are found on
the lake’s western and northern areas.
