Geocache Description:

The South Park Bridge was a Scherzer Rolling Lift double-leaf bascule bridge that spans the Duwamish River near Boeing Field in the South Seattle area. Built in 1929-31, it was the county’s longest bridge, spanning one-quarter mile from end-to-end. It was the only moveable (opening) bridge owned by King County. The bridge was an important regional arterial and freight corridor that carried an average of 20,000 vehicles per day, one-third of which were trucks.

The 2002 bridge inspection conducted by King County recorded an existing condition rating of 6.0 out of a possible score of 100 based on Federal Highway Administration criteria. This was among the lowest ratings given any bridge structure in the State of Washington.

The bridge was closed and dismantled in 2010. A new one is on the way thanks to the stimulus package and good ol' pork barrel politics.
