Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates! This is the location for the first clue of this puzzle cache.

Completely handicap friendly. This cache is hidden inside a hollowed-out book at the Orrington Public Library……, but you’ll have to do a little research before going to the library to find the clues to locate the right book! It has been hidden with the permission of the Librarian and the Town of Orrington Library committee.

This multi-cache is patterned after the “Gold & Iron” cache by Calvin RTVP. Although probably not the first library cache in Maine, I believe the first one in this area.

This is designed as a fun cache for those who may be “fair weather” cachers and those who don’t have a lot of mobility. This is not a difficult cache and the whole family can participate (young and old may even learn a bit about how the library works).

The goal is to fill in the following blanks:

____ ___ ____ . ___ ___ ___

A B C . A D E

Filling in the blanks will give you the Dewey Decimal Number of a book in the Orrington Public Library. The book "was" a real library book. It has been hollowed out to hold a container, logbook and some swag for the finders. Once you find it, you will know it, but you won’t find it by just random searching around the library.

To begin your search and fill in the answers to the A - E above, start at the Brewer Orrington Town line. As you enter town at N 44 45.895 W 068.47.027, you will find a sign with the Town’s date of Incorporation. The second number of the date = B. Take note there is a bit larger and newer sign, just a bit beyond this waymark. It also has the date you need.

Continue along River Road/Route 15 to N 44.45.556 W 068.47.406. At this site you will find a large, historic family home and barn. There is a sign out front with the date of this homestead. The fourth number of the date = D.

Further South on River Road/Route 15 turn onto Center Drive to your left just before N 44.43.861 W 068.49.623. This is Orrington Corner. You will be turning onto Center drive. Continue up the road and turn right into N 44 43.813 W 068 49.481 (entrance road to Town Hall). This is the front entrance to Town Hall/Office. It is an old historic building. Don't count the windows in the Tower (used during WW2 to watch for and sight planes) or the Door portion. How many big windows (historic) are on the front side? This will give you the number for C.

As you circle around the drive to exit, stop and take a moment to do some math. To get the A portion of this puzzle, take your number for C and multiply it by 3. C X 3 = A (____). Plug this into the number into the blanks to fill them in.

Now drive to the exit on Center Drive - turn right and, easterly, up Center Drive. At N 44.43.636 W 068.48.864, you will find the entrance to the Orrington Public Library and the Center Drive School. You will gather one more clue outside before entering the library.

The last clue is near the library door. This door is also marked as the entrance for some grades at the school. It is a range and one of the numbers is missing. This missing number = E.

You should now have all the blanks filled in and are ready to go into the library and meet the librarian.

They will help you with how to locate books in general, using the Dewey Decimal Number. It is up to you to find the book. Library hours are kept up to date on the Library website - there is a link to their website above on the red word library in the cache description. Sorry there are no weekend hours (except perhaps during Old Home Week every July).

Once you’re done, you can log your cache find right there at the library on their computer. Enjoy and welcome to Orrington! We hope you have had fun with this puzzle cache.

Thanks to the Town of Orrington for allowing us to place and maintain this cache in the library!
