Welcome to the longest foot bridge in the Southern Hemisphere measuring a quarter of a mile. The first bridge began construction in 1947 & was built on manuka piles to enable the children on the south side of the estuary to attend school on the north side. Previously the school teacher rowed a boat across the estuary twice a day to ferry the children across. The present bridge replaced the origional one about 20 years after it was built.
