Geocache Description:

Another corner of Auckland with some interesting history. The above location is not the final cache location.

This cache is designed, hidden and named by the grandsons who live nearby and play in this area often. They decided on a spider theme, so you'll find (and please leave) only spider related items.

As the first New Zealand athlete to win an Olympic gold, Jack Lovelock was edge spirit manifest, an enigmatic achiever whose running style was said to be 'artistic' in grace. His spectacular 1500m win at the 1936 Berlin Olympics began a rich history of achievement in New Zealand middle and long distance athletics, front-running for such later greats as Peter Snell, Murray Halberg and John Walker.

In 1933, Lovelock became the first New Zealander to achieve a recognised world record, running a 4 minute 7.6 second mile at Princeton, USA, against hometown hero Bill Bonthron. This track is named after him.

You must first visit a plaque which commemorates Bill Baillie's world record breaking runs here back in 1963. Take a moment to reflect on this slice of NZ history and be inspired by the great athletes we have produced.

Unfortunately some parts of this park occasionally get abused by the locals, so watch out for the odd bit of broken glass.

This is a very popular area, and retrieving the cache is going to take a bit of stealth, but cachers should have no problem with creative ways of doing this.

Once you have reached the plaque (the one with two panels), you'll need to travel 104 metres on a bearing of 085 degrees true to get to the cache site.

Please leave a spider if you are going to take one!
