Geocache Description:

A small cache that has been placed to introduce you to one of the easier access trails down to Bonny Doon Beach.

Bonny Doon Beach

This cache overlooks Bonny Doon Beach.

Go to N 36 59.983 W 122 10.757. Follow the volunteer trail up to and across the railroad tracks. Then go left of the rusted guardrail. Continue on along sand trails to the cache.

(The close proximity of the railroad tracks here to the actual trailhead prohibited placement of the cache right at the actual trailhead itself.)

Bonny Doon Beach is part of the storied Coast Dairies property near Davenport that officially became part of the California State Parks system in 2006. The 407 acres ceded to the park service offers "scenery and resources that have elicited a sense of connection to the land for many generations of residents and visitors," according to a state report.

The Coast Dairies property is bordered on the south by the 4,000-acre Wilder Ranch State Park, and on the north by the 3,200-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch. In all, Coast Dairies boasts five miles of coastline, six creeks and seven beaches.

Eight years of negotiations put the 407-acre coastal stretch between Scott Creek and Four Mile Beach in the hands of the state this summer, a gift from the nonprofit Trust for Public Land. It's one of the largest additions of public beaches in decades, but it's just the beginning.

Early next year, the trust will hand over the roughly 5,700-acre inland portion of Coast Dairies to the federal Bureau of Land Management.

The Trust for Public Land didn't make any improvements to the land after acquiring it in 1998. So the trails on the property are often like the coastline: rough and, at times, treacherous.

After you find the cache, go back to the rusted guardrail at the railroad tracks and make your way down the slope to the beach.

There are other ways down to Bonny Doon Beach but this way may be the easiest.

Be sure to bring your digital camera and post some pictures!

Enjoy! And happy caching!
