"Palmwedel"
Hirtstein
The Hirtstein (890 ms about NN) is a 25
million year old basalt occurence (Augit – Nephelinit) which
solidified to the so-called "palmwedel (palm frond)".
This fan of basalt is one of the most fascinating natural monuments
of Europe, it looks like a palm frond or a colossal flower.
This geologic phenomenon concerns lava which streamed out millions
of years ago and solidified on the surface as a 15 m high structure
of basalt in the fascinating form of a palm frond.
The columns from basalt stand horizontally along the cooling front
at the limitation of the former lava dome. At a place the columns
are stored professional-shaped (like a fan). This shows a geologic
rarity.
In May, 2006, it was classified of the basalt fields (basalt fan)
by the academy of the geosciences to Hannover as one of the most
significant geotypes of Germany.

Der Hirtstein (890 m
über NN) ist ein 25 Millionen Jahre altes Basaltvorkommen
(Augit – Nephelinit), das zum sogenannten
„Palmwedel“ erstarrte.
Dieser Basaltfächer ist eines der faszinierendsten
Naturdenkmäler Europas, er sieht aus wie ein Palmwedel oder
eine überdimensionalen Blume.
Bei diesem geologisches Phänomen handelt es sich um erstarrte
Lava, die vor Millionen von Jahren ausströmte und an der
Oberfläche als 15m hohe Bassaltstruktur in Form einer
Palmwedel erstarrte.
Die Säulen stehen horizontal zur Abkühlungsfront (der
Begrenzung der ehemaligen Lavakuppel). An einer Stelle sind die
Säulen fächerförmig gelagert. Sie stellen eine
geologische Seltenheit dar.
Im Mai 2006 wurde der Basaltfächer von der Akademie der
Geowissenschaften zu Hannover als einer der bedeutendsten Geotypen
Deutschlands eingestuft.
